A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, VICKIE SMITH

Thank you for your dedication to the Louisiana Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. Your work is important to the mission of promoting our profession. I am privileged to serve with you this year. We have a unique opportunity in this Centennial Year to promote our efforts. We look forward to membership and professional growth in each area of the state.

Thank you for exceeding our registration goals for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Conference in Knoxville. Louisiana was one of the first states to reach the target of more than 20% membership registered. Sarah DeRoche, Student Leader, and I are honored to represent you as senators.

Gail McMillon, President-Elect, and I will work together to bring you the best practices in Affiliate Leadership. Once again, Lori Myers graciously agreed to help us with the board display of our centennial celebrations, including display work from Southern University’s Centennial Celebration, provided by Dr. Doze' Butler and information about the 100 year fashion show presented by Louisiana Tech University. I am also excited about Sharon Pate’s goals for the promotion of our affiliate. Please share your information for the newsletter and website updates with Jan Zeringue and Bette Howell-Maroney.

Harriette Haley Black is already hard at work with her awards committee. The decision to separate the scholarship and awards efforts into separate committees has already being implemented. We look forward to enthusiasm from the scholarship committee including Gina Eubanks, Bette Howell-Maroney, Sharon Pate, Christy Sorenson and some student members. This newly formed scholarship committee represents our goals to include representation for each committee from student leaders and professional members from every area of the state.

Please plan to work hard in your individual district to recruit, reclaim and retain members. Our Fall Meeting and Leadership Conference is planned for September 18, 2009 at 10:00 A.M. We expect a large delegation of members when we meet at the Sawmill near Farmerville, Louisiana. Mollie Abadie, who was recognized at the AAFCS Conference for 50 years of service, recommended the Southern Heritage Museum. You can see more information and directions to the site at the website link http://www.forestheritagemuseum.org/
