The Northern District of the Louisiana Association of Family and Consumer Sciences held a meeting on Saturday, July 25, 2009 in the home of Dr. Daisy Daniels in Monroe. Harriette Haley Black was co-hostess. The meeting was billed as "A Birthday Party for FACS (Home Economics)" and LOTS of phone calls had been made to invite everybody that could be thought of, including former members.

The hostesses decorated with seasonal flowers from their gardens and prepared a display of the history of LAFCS and AAFCS. A favorite part was a plate from the past commemorating AHEA from a long ago convention Daisy attended. Lori Myers brought the new plate that commemorates 100 years which she had purchased. Harriette brought the commemorative gift, a crystal pillar with our emblem, that she received in Knoxville. There was another display of items from the Knoxville Conference and Lori Myers shared her lovely Betty Lamp that was a gift from fellow teachers when she left La. Tech University to work for AAFCS. She’s promised we can use it at conference next year, too.

Lori also gave a short talk about the profession and changes from the past and changes that are to come. We have a bright future even if it is going to be different. There was good attendance of members as well as former members. Lovely refreshments were enjoyed including a decorated birthday cake made by Dr. Daniels.

A short business session had good results with a full officer roster. Miranda Smith, who is the VP of Annual Meeting, told us she will be teaching in Mansfield when school starts and will actually have to take a day off from school to attend her graduation at Tech. She gave an overview of conference plans and got volunteers for her sub committees. Response was excellent from all. Many good suggestions and ideas flowed in the happy and up beat group. Be sure to mark February 26 and 27 on your 2010 calendar and come to Ruston for a great annual meeting.
