Professionals and students are recognized for outstanding contributions to the professions during an annual awards ceremony.  This page lists the awards for which members can be nominated.  Friends of the profession, those agencies or individuals who help us achieve our mission, can be nominated by members for two awards.

There is an application for each award.  Student awards applications are available through the district awards chair, university advisor.  Applications for other awards are available through the district awards chair or the website for the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) aafcs.org.

Nominations for professionals are submitted through the district awards chair to the state awards chair.

Nominations for students are submitted through the advisor and/or district awards chair to the state awards chair.

The deadline for award applications is January 15, 2008.

Student Award Nominations Due 

Student members, wishing to apply for the Outstanding Senior in Family and Consumer Sciences or Lela A. Tomlinson Scholarship award should submit applications by January 15, 2008.. 

Outstanding Senior in Family and Consumer Sciences  - This award is designed to honor a senior student who has been outstanding in academic pursuits and who has been a contributing member of his/her local unit.  Colleges/universities that are affiliated in a student section of LAFCS choose one person to honor and submit an application to the state committee.

Lela A. Tomlinson Scholarship - This scholarship bears the name of and honors the memory of a professional of long ago.  It is based on strong scholastic work, participation in activities of the organization and need of financial help.  This is a one-time award of $250.00

Applications must be submitted by mail and the deadline will be enforced.  Send the original and three copies when submitting an application.  Keep a copy for your records.  In addition to the written application, there will be an interview during the annual meeting in March 2008 in Lafayette, LA.

Professional members are recognized for contributions to the profession through the following awards:

• Distinguished Service Award

Those who support our mission and are not FCS professionals can be nominated for:

Leader Award

Any member who does not belong to the student unit and has been a member for eight years or more is eligible to receive this award.  The leader award was established to identify and recognize members who have made significant contribution to the family and consumer sciences profession through their involvement with AAFCS.

National Teacher of the Year Award

The National Teacher of the Year Award identifies and recognizes exemplary family and consumer sciences teachers who exhibit a deep commitment to the profession and to AAFCS. These teachers have outstanding educational programs that utilize methods, techniques, and activities integrated into the curriculum to provide the stimulus for and give visibility to family and consumer sciences elementary and secondary education.

New Achievers Award

Any member who does not belong to the student unit and has been a member for three years or more is eligible to receive this award.  The leader award was established to identify and recognize emerging members who have shown potential for making significant contributions to the field of family and consumer sciences.
